5 Biblical Principles to Know Before a Spiritual House Cleansing

5 Biblical Principles to Know Before a Spiritual House Cleansing

The basic premise of a house cleansing is very simple. When there is an unwanted spiritual presence or curse on a spiritual-house-cleansinghome, office, church, piece of land or other place it needs to be removed. A spiritual house cleansing, when done correctly, breaks curses and removes demonic beings. It also dedicates the place or thing to the Lord and invites His blessings and presence to dwell there.

Because Spiritual House Cleansing is not a commonly taught subject it is important to know five biblical principles before you start. Understanding these will affect how serious you take the spiritual house cleansing and will impact how effective you are. These five principles apply even more to us as individual believers than they do physical structures because we are the house or dwelling place of the Lord.

1.  Spiritual Warfare. Demonic spirits desire to enter, disrupt, cause confusion, inhabit and multiply in people as well as places. They do this when there is a legal right given to them. A legal right is simply a way of saying that a person has authorized the demon to operate in their lives. A good example of this is Eph. 4:27 “and do not give the devil an opportunity.” The King James uses the word “place” instead of opportunity. The Greek word used here is “topos” Strong’s # 5117. It has several meanings, but they all have the idea of a place, spot or room. Metaphorically it can mean a “license.”

People can give a legal right for a demonic spirit to invade or torment them, their homes, offices or other areas of their life. Christians should be careful not to believe they are exempt from sin in their lives giving a legal right.

2.  The Authority of Believers. When the seventy disciples returned they commented “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name” and Jesus replied “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall injure you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven” (Luke 10:17b – 20 NASB).

It is clear that believers have authority over demonic spirits and over all the work of the enemy. We also have power when baptized in the Holy Spirit as Acts 1:4-8. However, we would be wise to follow the instructions that Jesus gave to the seventy and guard ourselves so that we don’t become prideful or focus on the wrong things.

Outside of Jesus there is no real authority to cast out demonic spirits. The seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, found this out the hard way. The demonic spirits overpowered them to the point that they left naked and injured (Acts 19:14-17). Make sure that you are in Christ before you confront the enemy.

3.  Cleansing. The Old Testament has many examples of cleansing, but in this context the Tabernacle and Temple being cleansed stands out. In 2 Chronicles 29:3 King Hezekiah “…he opened the doors of the house of the Lord and repaired them” and then in verse 15 we read “and they assembled their brothers, consecrated themselves, and went in to cleanse the house of the Lord…”

After Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead there was a significant change. God no longer dwells in a building constructed by man. He now dwells in us when we repent of our sin and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. As the dwelling place of God we should be far more concerned with cleansing ourselves than a building (2 Corinthians 7:1).  However, this doesn’t mean that we should neglect our physical houses, churches and other dwelling places. The Lord dwells in us and we dwell in them. They should be clean of anything that will defile, tempt, open spiritual doors and grieve the Holy Spirit.

When performing a spiritual house cleansing you must make sure the place is free of anything that creates a legal right. This may be a sin by the occupants that needs to be renounced and repented of or it may be physical things. There are obvious things such as pornography, drugs or idols and there are things that are much more accepted in western Christianity such as Harry Potter books, Vampire books and movies, dream catchers and other items that open spiritual doors.

4.  Dedication and anointing. It was a common practice throughout the Bible to dedicate and anoint both people and things unto the Lord. Anointing and dedicating is simply a way to set a person or thing aside for God and His service (Gen. 28:18; 1 Kings 1:16; Ex. 28:41, 29:7; Lev. 8:12-30).

5.  God’s presence. Anytime a demonic spirit is kicked out of a person or place it is critical that it be filled with the presence of the Lord. “When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself and they go in and live there…” (Luke 11:24-25).

A spiritual house cleansing is a great opportunity to examine not only the places that we dwell in, but an effective reminder that we need to keep ourselves clean and dedicated to the Lord Jesus. Part three of this series is the practical how to. Don’t miss it!

Dr. Dave,
I just came across your blog while searching for information on spiritual house cleaning. Both of your blogs dated Jul 2012 were informative. At the end of this blog you stated: "Part three of this series is the practical how to. Don’t miss it!". I have not been able to find the 3rd blog on the practical how to.

Thanks for reading the older blog posts.

The third part was done as a webcast that is no longer available. This was also taught hands on at several of the Minister's retreats. I'm not sure when we will do another follow up on this. It partially depends on the requests, but mostly on the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions or would like to chat about it.

Hi Heidi,

There is one other blog post on this topic. If you scan through the blog articles you will see it. The rest of the "how to" was taught during our training events and retreats. During the last ministers retreat we walked through the step by step process and cleaned the room we were meeting in. It was a great learning experience. It is hard to cover the application in a blog.

Dr. Dave

This lesson and what has been going on at my Mission got me thinking. I have done house cleaning at home but not at work. Interestingly, I have noticed that there has been an increase in demonic presence at the mission which is not uncommon since we deal with the front line attack of the enemy. We serve felons, gang bangers, homeless, drug addicts, etc. They come in and bring the demonic influence with them as well as items that may have spiritual attachments to them. Just this last Friday, I spoke with several individuals who live at the mission about all sorts of spiritual issues from dream catchers, ouija board, demonic possession, etc. So, I believe that a spiritual house cleansing is in order. We will start in the chapel and move throughout the mission to anoint and pray for the mission. Spiritual warfare is a big part of what we do but we need to step up and do it this Monday after discipleship class. Thanks for the reminder. God bless!

Yes, you are correct. You should do a spiritual cleansing on a regular basis. You can also have the chaplains and ministers walk through the building praying. You are on the front line and should make this as well as worship music in the mission a primary focus.

Very good and timely word. We have just taken a 17 year old girl into our home who has had an incredibly disturbing and wound-filled life. My children have been behaving in some very peculiar ways. I knew it was spiritual, but we have been so busy with the garden, canning, fair, and my father's poor health, that to be honest, I have slacked off on the depth of my prayer time and Bible study. I usually spend a couple of hours of quiet time each morning with the Lord, but I've been skimping on that because of time restrictions, and tiredness.

This past Sunday, I was in service and the sweetest, most precious presence of the Lord filled the sanctuary, to the point that the pastor didn't even preach. I basked in this and reveled in the cleansing, forgiving, loving atmosphere. I have found that when I feel myself drifting, the first thing I must do is ask the Lord to break me and reveal what it is that is causing my drift. This was the same day we were bringing the young girl home. The Lord spoke to my heart to fast and pray, and I thought, "I'm going to do that.....in a few days." I've not slept well the last few nights, and even my husband mentioned the strange behavior of our children.

This morning, the kids were getting up to go detassle corn, and I could not find my key to the truck. We searched and searched, to no avail, so they took the car. I searched some more, then I stopped and said, "Holy Spirit, you know where that key is. You can see it. Please direct me." Immediately I thought to look in the trash and sure enough, there it was. It struck me instantly, the availability of the One who knows all things, and His grace and mercy even when we are not in perfect step, and I thought to myself, "I must clean my heart and mind and get my house back in order."

Now, I say all that to say this, I was getting ready to go have my devotional time and the Lord pricked my heart again, about fasting. I was heading to my prayer spot and thought, I'm going to check the NCCC site for the next conference call because I've been unavailable the last two times and I need to be on the next one. They are so informative. So I came here and saw I missed the "Spiritual Cleansing" session, and opted to read the blog about it. Yep, I needed this. Hit the nail on the head. I've got some major cleansing to do. In me, in my home, over my children, and our new guest. No wonder the Lord is wanting me to fast.

I have been walking with the Lord and in ministry for years. The Lord has used this broken vessel to pray and see healing (like a broken arm no longer broken), bring demonic deliverance (to a demon possessed man lunging at me in devil tongues), and to operate prophetically (by speaking to someone that I know nothing about and being right on target). It's all Him...by His Spirit, and yet, I hold the key to whether or not He can use me, by being either spiritually clean, or tainted. No matter where we are in our walk with the Lord, we are vulnerable. Even Moses got out of sync. (Num 20:8) I am going to begin my fast, and cleanse my house. I am so thankful I read this blog, and the comments. There is much work to be done in the Kingdom, each of us operating in his/her corner of the world, and we must, through humility and wisdom, keep ourselves cleansed and available to be the Light to the lost. I would appreciate prayer from my fellow ministers.

Whether a seasoned Christian or a new born convert, this word from Dr. Smuin is powerful and necessary to understand and implement into our lives. Thanks for sharing.

One of the biggest problems, in my opinion is unbelief. Christians have faith, but are often hindered by the combination of belief vs. unbelief. Jesus said, don't doubt but only believe, so it stands to reason that both can exist is the same mindsets of believers. This can become a battle and cause believers to doubt that they can do anything at are, are powerless because they don't know for sure if what they feel led to do or say will "work" like it did for Jesus. Sad, but true. I have started making the statement, "I have God's faith; I do not walk in unbelief..." Right words work wonders!

This was an excellent presentation. I read it, I was not on the call. But I appreciated the content very much. A book on this topic that really impacted me many years ago was Glory on your House by Jack Hayford, describing this very process. I have participated a number of times with individuals who have asked, to pray as they move into new property, home, apartment, etc. It is a powerful time together always, praying from room to room, walking the borders of the property, and asking the Holy Spirit to fill the place, with His Presence, the purposes of God, and that everyone who steps through the front door would be blessed and drawn to the Holy and Awesome God!!

One other thing I would share which was such a joy to behold. A lady from a Catholic upbringing was attending my adult Sunday School class, and we studied the Isaiah passage about idols. Really, we only had time that week to read it together outloud, and it was to be the passage for the coming week. She came up after the class and said, Cindy, I have to go home and clean house. I looked at her, and smiled, and said ok, and she said, no I mean I have to clean my house. It is filled with amulets, statues, and other items that I have grown up thinking would invoke God's blessing. I must go home and clean house!!! Well, praise God, she did. Simply reading and hearing in her ears the powerful word of God for the first time in that way brought conviction and complete understanding of what God was calling her to do. Praise God!!!

Dr. Dave
This is a great topic and one that is usually misunderstood or becomes a mystical guess work and fictional events. Personally, I have a great deal of experience in this area. Both in Christ and when I was outside of Christ. I probably have enough experience with this issue to write a book on the topic. But since this is a blog, I will share just one experience.
I want to share this one because it is based on something you may not even think about as having a spiritual significance. My wife has a college friend who went to the Middle East (don’t remember the specific country) for a term job a few years back. The friend bought a Persian rug as gift for my wife. We brought it home and placed it in storage for a while but one day my wife and I decided to bring it into the house and put it in our guest room. One night my wife was snoring loudly probably due to a sinus infection, I decided to sleep down stairs in the guest room to get some sleep.
About 1-2 am I started to have a dream and it was more like a nightmare. However, my spiritual discernment kicked in and told me that this was a demonic attack on me while I was sleeping. I have had spiritual attacks similar to this in the past. So, I woke up and started to pray in the spirit (tongues) because I generally do not know how to pray in those situations therefore, I trust in the Holy Spirit to do so for me according to Scripture Romans 8:25-27. At this point a spiritual battle ensues between the Spirit and the demonic being. It is intense spiritual warfare and it physical and emotionally draining. However, God always casts the demon out. But in this instance, God revealed to me that the demon was invited in via the rug. It was attached to it and waited for its opportunity to strike.
So, sometimes it is not always the easy things that are spiritual items such as Ouija boards, crystals, dream catchers, Harry Potter books, etc. It can be things that have demonic influence attached to them. So, I concur with Dr. Dave that it is a great idea to periodically go through your house, office at work, etc and pray for a hedge of protection around it and for it and to dedicate that space and contents to God. The Holy Spirit will reveal things out of place and just remove them. Sometimes it is hard as it can be family heirloom. Do not give the enemy a foothold! Do not give him license through sin. We do live in a spiritual and a physical world. Be on your guard. God bless.

Great comment Mike. Yes, things like this can be the open door for the demonic. It is important that we use wisdom and discernment. Things like bad dreams, conflict in the home and unusual behaviors can be a strong indication that there is a spiritual attack.

Dr. Smuin, can you explain what #5. God's Presence scripture, “When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any,". In particular the part about "waterless places". Is it referring to Jesus as our Living Water and looking for waterless places?

I apologize if this posts twice but I looked for my original post and could not find it.
thank you,
Christine

Hi Christine,

We covered your question a bit on the conference call, but I wanted to give a short reply here as well. The term "waterless places" has also been translated "dry places" or "uninhabitable places." The idea is that a demon needs somewhere to reside. They prefer people, but will settle for swine as was the case of the demoniac with the legion of demons.

We can debate about the full meaning, but our understanding is limited. They key thing to know is that the demon will come back to the place it left and will gather other demons who are stronger in an attempt to secure the residence for itself. I find it interesting that a demon would rather share the space with multiple others than to give up the inhabitable place.

As always, keep your eyes on Jesus and guard your heart when studying these topics.

Gosh! We have Native American in our family history. I have two dream catchers in my home, and never realized that this could be causing our issues! I am getting rid of them RIGHT AWAY, and cleansing our home! I had NO CLUE that they were considered a bad thing for Christians to have. Thank you so much for this story, and information!

JB,
Even though your family member may not be interested in being obedient to God, you still have authority in your environment. Many times in a very hostile work and home environment, and when alone, I have commanded all evil spirits out of the area where I resided. Then I anointed the space with oil, and blessed the entire room, house, persons who live or work there, including the furniture they sit on. I did this daily or as often as given the opportunity.

The other parties began to be more peaceful, even though they did not know what had happened. Even bosses would sometimes be so peaceful that they would fall asleep in their chair! My advice is to stay very close, as possible, to God, and live with wisdom with unbelievers. If you decide to cast out the evil, be sure to cover yourself first with the blood of Jesus. Yield all to God, who is ultimately in control. God Bless you!

I have a question that I hope you can provide some insight. I understand the principles that you explain and wholeheartedly agree. I do find there to be confusion regarding my situation. This bothers me because I know that GOD is not the author of confusion. What if you're not he one who has given legal right to the enemy? What if it's a household member? I have gotten rid of everything I can find that's in the house (that I know of) but I cannot cast somethin out of someone that is not interested in getting rid of it. I'm very concerned for him by he amount of pain and hurt being caused is more than oppressive to me. I read Romans chapter 1 and 8 and see these patterns of degradation. Help??? Thank you

Help??? Thank you

Hi JB,
Great question. It is difficult when another person in the family allows sin or is involved with something destructive. There are a few things you can do such as praying more specific spiritual warfare prayers and anointing the door to their room for example. The most beneficial thing you could do is have your pastor get involved and address the larger issues of relationship and need for the Lord. If you don't have a pastor who can do this look for a biblical counselor who may be able to help. It sounds like you are on the front line. Don't get discouraged or isolated. Call for back up.
Blessings,

Dear JB,

I have been close to God and Jesus my entire life, and have been blessed through their power and authority since I was a child to cast out demons. Although I have cast out many demons from places, I have never tried to cast one out from a person, nor from a remote location, but because God is capable of absolutely everything, as long as it is His will it is possible. I have just prayed and invoked the charge that will drive out or destroy the demon (or demons) possessing your family member, and pray that I was successful.

It was probably not the case that your family member wanted the demon to stay - once a person is possessed it may appear that the person does not want to cast out the demon, but the demon is in charge at that point, so it will make you believe the person wants the demon to stay. Once the demon is cast out, the person is vulnerable to allowing a demon back in, (not necessarily inviting, but allowing because they are spiritually weak), so you must help strengthen them spiritually by having them blessed and doing what you can to help keep them spiritually cleansed. The only way this will truly work is to encourage your family member to develop a relationship with Jesus by reading and learning about Him, and hopefully eventually accepting Him as the Savior.

Please let me know if this helped or if there's anything else I can do.

God Bless,
Nancy St. Francis

This teaching was a wonderful teaching about spiritual cleansing. As I have practiced this area in my life and others, I have found the most impressing area we tend to forget as leaders in this difficult arena is to maintain God's presence in the final stage of cleansing. As the demonic are removed from our places or persons, it is critical to cast these demons into the sea or abyss - Mark 11:23 and replace it with the presence of God. God's presence is to fill in the gap so nothing can come in its place. I believe this is a reminder for all of us who will come into contact with the demonic to be covered by the Lord and His grace, mercy and love, claim Psalm 91 for the assurance of His coverage and the condemnation of Satan.
